Dear EARLI colleagues,
This is the first official JURE & EARLI 2011 Conference Newsletter. We would like to give you some useful practical information about the conference, the registration process, about traveling to Exeter and about staying there.
The EARLI conference is perhaps the most important educational research conference outside of the USA and we think this gives us a great responsibility to respond to the challenges that we are living through, particularly the challenges thrown up by a rapid transition towards a future world that will be much more global and much more networked. This is why the theme of the conference is, Education for a Global Networked Society. To serve that theme we will open the conference to the world through a parallel virtual conference open to all and through special invited symposia showcasing research from regions normally poorly represented in EARLI conferences.
The EARLI 2011 website is now open for online registrations through this link. Below in this newsletter you will find an overview of the different conference registration fees. It is possible to register for the EARLI 2011 conference and/or for the JURE 2011 pre-conference. The JURE conference dinner on the 29th of August is included in the conference registration fee, more information will follow soon. Participants who would like to attend the EARLI conference gala dinner can book one or more conference dinner tickets throughout the registration process. The EARLI Gala Dinner, on Friday 2nd September, is the highlight of the social programme and will be a wonderful opportunity for you to take part in a formal dinner within the Great Hall of the University of Exeter. The Great Hall is located in the very heart of the University Campus and the Gala Dinner will be the first event held in this location to celebrate its top quality refurbishment. The evening will prove to be full of surprises. There will be roaming magicians and a live jazz and blues band made up by some of the county’s best young school musicians. An exquisite menu, show casing West Country produce, is being planned and drinks will be flowing. This will be a really special evening where nothing but the best will do, organised by the award winning Event Exeter. The ticket price of €75 includes all food, drink and entertainment. There will also be a cash bar available throughout the evening. Dress code: smart/formal. It is important to note that the Gala Dinner is limited to 500 people and so we must operate on a first come first served basis. Make sure you book early to avoid disappointment. More information about the conference gala dinner can be found on the EARLI 2011 website.
The large number of submissions shows that both the EARLI conference and the JURE pre-conference prove to be very popular among educational researchers all over the world. In March next year, you will receive an email to notify you whether your proposal has been accepted or rejected for the EARLI conference. Junior researchers who submitted for the JURE pre-conference receive notification in January. We have opened the website for registrations this early, because we know that some participants need to register before the end of this year. 22 April 2011 is the ‘early bird deadline’, after this date, the conference registration fees increase by 100 €. Future JURE members, please note, that if you are entitled to the reduced student registration fee, JURE membership is required before you start the registration process for the conference(s). In order to avoid problems when the early bird deadline is approaching, it is required to complete your JURE membership application (payment + sending the proof of student status to the EARLI office) at the latest on 1 April 2011. If your membership application is not completed before that date, we cannot guarantee the reduced EARLI bird registration fee.
JIGSAW, the official housing agent for the EARLI Biennial Conference in Exeter, has made a selection of hotels in and around Exeter for you, in consultation with the organisation.
